Scholastica’s College Alumnae Association Celebrates 10th Anniversary
St. Scholastica's College
Alumnae Association Canada (SSCAAC) celebrates the 10th year of its
founding in Toronto on May 4, 2001. Billed TEN: A Scholastican Celebration, the
event will be held at Toronto Famee Furlane, 7065 Islington, north of Steeles
Ave. The programme will include a
dinner-dance highlighted by a two-piano concert featuring Milagros Macuja-Markun
and Elsieta Arao, two of the outstanding graduates of St. Scholastica’s School
of Music. Ms. Macuja-Markun is
currently Adjunct Faculty and Piano Class Co-ordinator at Marshall University in
Huntington, West Virginia, and Ms. Arao, who recently moved to Toronto from
Thunder Bay, is a piano teacher and personal banker with Royal Bank. The
mini-concert showcases some of the works for two pianos by foremost Filipino
composer, Francisco Buencamino Sr. and a piano duet by J.S. Bach.
SSCAAC was started in Toronto
10 years ago by a group of four Scholasticans meeting socially in the downtown
store of Myrna Bayaborda, Scholastican owner of The Cakeshoppe. The group of four touched base with eight more and has since
grown to its present list of over 80 members.
The association has adopted
projects of its alma mater, St. Scholastica's College, in Manila, Philippines.
In response to a request from Sr. Mary Placid, O.S.B., SSC Dean of Music
and Alumnae Moderator, for financial support for her music ministry, proceeds
from Christmas carolling have been sent for two music scholars annually for the
past six years.
In 1998 a fun night was held
to raise money for “A Chair for St. Cecilia's”, a project to provide
financial assistance for the renovation of St. Cecilia's Hall, SSC's concert
auditorium, a premier music hall that has been declared a historical landmark in
the Philippines. Other endeavours
include an SSCAAC-funded four-year college scholarship and initial donations to
the SSC Faculty Endowment Fund and the new branch school St. Scholastica (Westgrove),
in Silang, Cavite.
Tickets for TEN: A
Scholastican Celebration are $35 each, and still available from members of St.
Scholastica's College Alumnae Association Canada.
